Francesco Curcio, Head Prosecutor by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Potenza, was elected as one of new members of GRETA

On the 9th of November 2018, the Italian Francesco Curcio, Head Prosecutor by the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Potenza, was elected as one of new members of GRETA, the group of the Council of Europe composed of 15 members that works against the trafficking of human beings. GRETA members conduct missions in different countries and publish periodic reports, evaluating legislative and other measures adopted, in order to monitor the implementation of the 2005 Convention against trafficking of human beings. This legal instrument of the Council of Europe aims at protecting all the victims of exploitation and trafficking, both national and transnational, with a focus perspective on human rights.

The fact that the Head Prosecutor Curcio can contribute to the important work of GRETA represents a great success for our country, especially in light of the long experience in the fight against criminal organizations. In his 30 years of duty he has been dealing with cross-border trafficking of human beings, as well as the ones concerning arms and drugs’ smuggling. More recently, he also worked in the National Anti-mafia and Anti-terrorism Directorate (DNA), where he conducted investigations on transnational crimes such as trafficking of human beings and smuggling of illegal migrants, deeply studying their links with the organized crimes and financing of terrorism. Moreover, Head Prosecutor Curcio took part in a great number of judicial international cooperation activities, including with Eastern Europe, Balkan and African judicial Authorities, coordinating investigations between Italian and foreign Prosecutor Offices. It is also thanks to these activities that he could acquire a deep knowledge of the legal and procedural systems of the Member States of the
Council of Europe and of Third countries, and be able to provide a unique contribution to the work of GRETA and to the missions on the field, aimed at fighting against the trafficking of human beings and organized crime.
