On Wednesday 17 November, after more than 20 years, Italy took over the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, following the Hungarian chairmanship. During the handover ceremony in Strasbourg, which marked the official start, Luigi Di Maio, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, outlined the priorities of the Italian Presidency: reaffirming our shared principles and values, strengthening women’s empowerment, the rights of children and adolescents and building a people-centred future.
After, as per tradition, the tricolor was hoisted in the city center and a tram with the logo of the Italian Presidency was inaugurated at the stop “Droits de l’Homme”, which will be operating in Strasbourg throughout the Semester. The presentation of the commemorative stamp of the presidency of Italy, officially issued on the day of the handover, was also amongst these significant moments.
