The Italian Minister of Justice, Andrea Orlando, carried out a new mission in Strasbourg on 20th February 2018, in the framework of the excellent dialogue with Council of Europe, which has been coherently conducted throughout the legislature and characterized by frank and fruitful exchanges with these Authorities.

The Minister signed the new Protocol amending the Additional Protocol to the Convention on the Transfer of Sentenced Persons (further information can be found at https://www.giustizia.it) and held bilateral meetings respectively with the Secretary General, Thorbjørn Jagland, and the President of the European Court of Human Rights, Guido Raimondi.

This mission, that followed the one in October last year, on the one hand, allowed the Minister of Justice to illustrate the results achieved in the last years through the reforms in the Italian judiciary and penitentiary sector (among these, the drastic reduction of pending procedures backlog at the Court and of prison overcrowding) and, on the other hand, allowed him to reiterate the importance of the Council of Europe as guardian of the principles and values of the European Convention on Human Rights and as incentive to increase the national standards in human rights, rule of law and democracy issues.
